Earth Science

Volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon that can cause a great deal of damage to properties and loss of lives. Lava flows are commonly perceived as the primary hazard during a volcanic eruption. However, this belief has been proven to be false. There are more dangerous hazards that must be observed during a volcanic eruption, and some of these are volcanic earthquakes, pyroclastic surges and flows and lahars.

Volcanic earthquakes occur when there is a great stress and pressure changes in the ground due to the injection of magma. These types of earthquakes can result to ground cracks, ground deformation and destruction of buildings and houses around the volcano. However, the most alarming effects of the earthquakes are landslides and tsunamis. Landslide can happen when there is a great mass movement from a higher ground to a lower one. Tsunamis, on the other hand, are large waves that can cause large damage, especially to people living near the coastal area. To show the destructive powers of volcanoes, Krakataus explosion in 1883 created waves that is as high as 35 meters. The waves were the main cause of death, killing around 30000 people.

Fast and unstable low density flows made out of pyroclastic materials are called pyroclastic surges. These surges are hot enough to burn houses, animals, vegetation and, when caught, even human skin. Pyroclastic surges killed 30000 people when Mount Pelee exploded in 1902. On the other hand, pyroclastic flows are hot fluidized masses of rock fragments and denser than pyroclastic surges. Pyroclastic surges and flows also emit gases that can result to ash rainfalls and asphyxiate people.

Lastly, one of the most detrimental hazards of a volcanic eruption is lahars. Lahars are similar to pyroclastic flows except for it contains more water. They can be formed when rainfall on loose materials like ashes and when pyroclastic flow dilutes with some bodies of water like rivers. Like pyroclastic flows and surges, lahars are also turbulent and can extend its damage up to hundreds of kilometres from the volcano (Riley, 2010).

Pyroclastic flows and lahars are so far deemed to be the most dangerous volcanic hazards. Direct results from a volcanic eruption like pyroclastic surges and flows, lava flows and earthquakes can produce damages on ground structures and can claim human lives. Conversely, an indirect result from the explosion like lahars has been proven to be as vicious as the direct results.

Catastrophism and uniformitarianism are the two of the most common views and arguments of scientists on how the Earths geological structure evolved through time. Catastrophism explains the geological changes in Earths physical structure as an abrupt, violent and short-term process. On the other hand, uniformitarianism describes these changes as a long and gradual process.

The two concepts differ in many aspects. Followers of catastrophism believe that the causes of physical changes in the environment are a series of violent events that happened so fast and do not conform to a particular pattern. The meteor that killed the dinosaurs millions of years ago is an example of these events. On the other hand, uniformitarianist believed that the events that causes changes on the environment reoccurs at an exact interval and that these events have the same rate. Because it is assumed that these events occur at the same rate, it is possible, according to them, to determine the past events using the current events experienced.

Most geologists accepted the concept of uniformitarianism. According to them, it is the closest thing to reality. It also appeared in most of the books on earth science. Geologist also found out that the sudden major events of extinction are not really sudden. Careful study of the data reveals that these events have a reoccurrence period of about 30 million years (Hancock, et al, 2000).

Google Inc

Joint ventures are very common in todays business environment. Resources available to a company are limited and so to start a new project or to excel in new markets, joint ventures are used. Joint venture is defined as a strategic alliance between two people, companies or businesses in order to reap maximum benefits and the two parties involved share assets and knowledge as well. There are all sorts of business ventures for example two companies can join hands on a particular project or two companies can come together for many projects.

Google Inc. is a huge corporation that specializes in search engines. It was launched in 1998 and since then the company has become a huge success. Google has revived the concept of internet searching and the search engine of Google is considered the best. Google also earns great revenues from advertisements. The publisher system of Google is also very good. The ease with which a person can advertise through Google is simply amazing. People all around the world use Google search engine many times a day and it has become a part of our life. The user friendly browser has earned the management of Google great profits ( HYPERLINK httpentrepreneurs.about.combioScott-Allen-8965.htm Allen, n.d.).
Joint Ventures by Google

Google is a huge corporation and has resources like no other internet company. Many companies like to work with Google on different projects because of the scale of Google operations and the authenticity of the name of Google. Google itself is always searching for new ways to expand its business and is looking for new markets where it can expand. These joint ventures actually help the general public a lot because as a result of joint ventures new products and services are invented which would have been a dream for a single company. Many companies specialize in many different areas and thats why joint ventures take place.
A very interesting project that Google has started with the collaboration of Virgin Group is project Virgle. This is a joint venture that will send spaceships to mars and these space ships will have people who are willing to live on the planet mars. This project is a very futuristic approach by Google and it believes that there will come a time when the technology will allow us to visit and reside on the planet mars. The place on earth will finally be consumed and people will have to find new planets in order to sustain life (techblissonline.com, n.d).

This is a project which sounds weird and highly unrealistic but that is the whole point of Google Corporation that it sees future like no one. Who would have believed that a small internet company would grow up in a giant corporation like Google The search engine that Google made can help us with whatever information we want. We in 1990 also laughed at the idea of internet and other technologies but now we are using them in our day to ay life. Google made it possible and in my opinion Google will also make living on mars possible.

Google and Cleveland Clinic
Google has also started this joint venture with Cleveland clinic which is the first step of Google in the field of online health care. This will allow people and patients to get their hands on online medical journals and information easily and efficiently. The idea of the venture is to allow the patients to get hold of their own medical information and consult different doctors and medical care centers online. Google will earn great profits from this venture as it will allow Google to advertise a whole lot of medical and dental care services and profits (Silicon Valley  San Jose Business Journal, 2008).

Sprint, Clearwire and Google together
This is another joint venture of Google that involve many companies like Intel and Comcast. The aim is to provide next generation WiMax technologies to the users. This is also a very futuristic project where these giant companies are trying to bag the future markets. This joint venture is the best example of why joint ventures take place. All the companies involved are huge but they cannot do work, at this level, alone so they have collaborated with each other (Dignan, 2008).

Google is also getting its share in the internet broadband market and this is done without taking much risk. If Google will itself try to develop its own broadband company then it will be very difficult for the company to take to the level of 4 G technology. But by joint hands all these companies have made a smart move and are trying to gain as much profits as possible, at very little risk.

Google and GeoEye
This is another step taking by Google in order to provide its users with high quality images through Google earth. The GeoEye Company launched its satellite and this satellite will provide Google Earth customers with high resolution pictures along with the U.S government.  This can be termed as a joint venture as Google will be the only customer which will provide search mapping to its users. This is another example of how the company can improve its operations by joining hands with a specialist company. The quality of images that will be provided to Google Earth users will be great because the same satellite is also used by the United States Government. The speed with which technology is getting to the users is simply amazing and thats why joint ventures are a key in todays business environment and many companies around the world are doing this (reuters.com, n.d).

Microsoft Google Joint Venture
A joint venture by Microsoft and Google known as Google books is an example of how a strong party can easily come out of trouble, profitably. Google books was criticized of scanning books online and making it available for all the users. Google came up with a great solution and it made a deal with Microsoft which will give Google monopoly over all the books that are available on the World Wide Web. In this way Google can show brief excerpts of many books without getting in the copyrights problem. This deal is also criticized as many believe that it was not a settlement but an illegal merger (Koman, 2009).

Conclusion
From all of the above venture examples you will identify that the maximum beneficiary was Google. Google has this monopoly over many internet and search engines and advertising business that many companies cannot do anything about it. Most companies will have to give in to the demands of Google. Google is also expanding its job market with remarkable efficiency and gaining profits that are unmatchable.

Google is trying to make it invincible form all the competition that exists in the industry and Google is successful in all these efforts. The general public also benefits from these ventures as people are getting amazing products and services at a cheap price because of these collaborations. Companies are now getting over their egos and are talking and working with arch rivals in order to save themselves with competition. This is also a way to survive in the ever growing industries.

Virtualization in small businesses

Virtualization is the development of a virtual version of anything for instance operating system, storage devices, network servers etc.  It is a concept in which for example a piece of hardware say a server is coordinated and enabled to run multiple operating systems such that all of them share that piece of hardware. Virtualization enhances the ability of a computer to perform various tasks.

Introduction to the technology of virtualization
Virtualization is concerned with the generalization of various computer resources. There are four major ways of virtualization namely hardware virtualization, network virtualization, storage virtualization and application virtualization.

Hardware virtualization
In hardware or platform virtualization, the computer memory is divided in separate and isolated parts known as Virtual machines (VM). Virtual machines are mechanisms which are basically a virtual (software) version of a computers physical hardware. It permits various versions of the same operating system or different operating systems to run simultaneously on a single computer. It should be kept in mind that the concept behind virtual machines is different from a dual boot or multi boot system where only a single operating can be chosen and run at a time. Virtual machines are also considered to be programming language interpreters for example Java Virtual Machine, Python etc. There are two types of virtual machine namely system virtual machines and process virtual machines.

System virtual machines These are also known as hardware virtual machines which comprise of a system platform that supports the execution of an entire OS.

Process virtual machines These are also known as application virtual machines since they only allow a single process or application to run on the different environments

Network virtualization
It involves the monitoring and administration of an entire network from a single network administrators workstation. In network virtualization, a single pool is created in which all servers and related services are brought together which could also be rearranged in real time in order meet any future changes in requirements.

Storage virtualization
In storage virtualization, various types of storage media are brought together in a single pool. This enables different applications to read or write from this pool of storage mediums. Storage virtualization is sometimes also termed as file virtualization, in file virtualization any excess storage capacity on a server can be shared. Moreover files can also be transferred (migrated) from one server to the other.

Application virtualization
In application virtualization, various applications can be accessed and executed by different environments on a physical hardware (through a virtualization layer) are without the need to necessarily installing them. Application virtualization has considerable benefits for instance it allows applications to run in environments which dont support the application in its original format (Golden. 2007).

Major players in the virtualization software industry
Virtualization software industry was an estimated  6 billion in 2008 and analysts project that it will exceed  22 billion by the end of 2013.  This billion dollar industry is therefore beginning to gain strong ground in the technology sector.

Although Microsoft is among the giants when considering the complete technology sector and has been strongly rivaled by Google only but when considering the virtualization software industry independently VMware is considered to be the leader.

VMware has a mammoth 80 share of the virtualization software market in 2008. And the remaining 20 was shared by other leading market participants namely Oracle (for its Virtual Iron), Citrix Systems (for Xen) and Microsoft.

The reason behind VMwares success which is a highly successful company today with estimated 1.9 billion
revenue in 2008 is its resilient technology. VMware has continuously updated the features of its various virtualization softwares which are reflective of changing needs.

Moreover VMware also announced the acquisition of SpringSource who is a leading open source software development tools developer. Acquisition of SpringSource has the potential to overcome the prowess of Windows operating system on both cost efficiency and technical grounds.

Another key approach which makes VMware stand out is its endeavor to further cut down its operational costs through increasing the deployment of virtualized servers which would further bring down the need of human administrators. This is being done as a measure to provide more cost efficient products to their customers.

On the other hand analysts do predict that Microsofts virtualization softwares are gradually starting to catch up largely due to superior marketing and better features and it is expected that Microsoft will have a 29 market in 2012. (The New York Times. n.d)

How virtualization technology can be used for small businesses
Virtualization is usually considered to be fully utilized by large enterprises which have a large volume of data and resources which would need the assistance of virtualization. However with time and advancement in information technology the need for virtualization has even been felt by small businesses.

Moreover high performing computer systems and servers at affordable costs also encouraged small businesses to give a second thought to virtualization. However in order to take substantial advantage of virtualization the following steps have to be understood and effectively performed

Server Deployment
This is a time consuming task and will require substantial input from the IT staff. It involves a system being built from scratch which would include installation and configuration of operating systems, applications and the network. A major issue with this task is that for every new system the whole task would have to be repeated again. Therefore it would be much more feasible for small businesses to once deploy a system and redeploy it as and when needed via a virtual environment.

This would be done through a mechanism called transportable images. A transportable image a system to built and tested on a hardware platform which could then be redeployed on any hardware irrespective of the configuration.

Though one thing should be kept in mind that not every deployment tool supports transportable images hence the imaging program chosen should all sorts of data migration i.e. physical to virtual machine, virtual to virtual, virtual to physical and physical to physical.

Hardware and software support
Small businesses should also ensure that their hardware and application support 64-bit technology since many IT infrastructures today use this and it wont be long before it completely replaces the 32-bit technology. Therefore even if businesses arent using the 64-bit hardware currently they should ensure that their systems are capable of switching to this platform in future because no doing so would result in redeployment of an entitys servers in every four to five years which would definitely be quite costly for a small business in particular.

Furthermore it should also be ensured that appropriate tools are available which allow switching from one virtual OS to another.

Migration process customization
Since the volume of data is considerably less than in large organizations, there will be instances where an entity would wish to only to transfer a group of folders or files from one virtual system to another. This can be facilitated through tools that can drag and drop files in between different systems.

Handling live data
Employees in small businesses tend be less and that in the IT department tend be even lesser particularly if its a subsidiary department, therefore handling live data is quite a challenge for small businesses.
Smaller entities have only a handful of tools and methods to create a backup of live data which should be considered appropriately. One method would be to shutdown the server and take backup, although this method would prevent loss of data but it would bring all business processes to a halt and adversely affect the overall productivity of the business. Another method would be back up live data in the background on a live running system. This can be done through a disk imaging application (Wolf  Halter, 2005).

How it could be useful
Virtualization has many uses for small business for instance it could be used for disaster recovery purposes. It has been seen that small businesses due to lack of focus on effective disaster recovery plans tend to lose substantial data which sometimes cannot be recovered even and hence becomes a permanent loss for an entity.  Even if data is recoverable somehow it still is a laborious task and involves an opportunity cost sine the IT personnel could focus their efforts on more productive tasks.

Virtualization here could save the business the loss of data and time by capturing backup on a single image and therefore making recovery easier.

Benefits of Virtualization in small sized businesses
Virtualization has significant benefits not only for large businesses but for small and medium sized businesses as well.

Increase in efficiency of IT personnel
Most IT departments in small business are known to be occupied with routine tasks for the major part of the day which adds little or no value to the business. Ever since the adoption of virtualization by smaller entities, it has been seen that IT staff are now focusing their energies on more transformative tasks.

Backup and data protection
As discussed earlier, virtualization also helps entities in not only making an appropriate back up but also make sure that data protection is achieved which is crucial for an organization to retrieve accurate historical data when needed.

Becoming more responsive to changing business needs

Increase in company profitability and growth

Data is unprocessed knowledge for any business and it proper preservation is gaining importance with each passing day. Workstations and servers are deployed by an organization to fulfill that purpose however the amount of data an organization possesses has seen significant increase over the years for organizations all around the world. Therefore virtualization has seen an increase in popularity probably because it has helped entities save substantial capital costs which have resulted in improved profitability and growth.

Disadvantages of Virtualization in small sized businesses
A major disadvantage of virtualization in small businesses is that it involves higher bandwidth expenses and higher costs for deploying individual servers. Even if a small sized business is performing well it is difficult to justify the benefits one can get from it.

Since the needs of small businesses are quite less it has been seen that virtualization is not used to its full potential and hence the benefit obtained is marginal.

Organizations which lack the capabilities of effectively managing application performance can lose out on many benefits of virtualization.

Larger business benefit from economies of scale obtained as result of application of virtualization however the same cant be said for smaller businesses.

Moreover virtualization involves newer technology after every few years and it could be difficult for small business to afford significant capital expenditures every few years.

Conclusion
Small businesses face much of the same challenges and have to perform many of the same tasks as large businesses, the only difference is in the volume. Increasing advancement in information technology has brought the concept of virtualization to the forefront which makes a business more portable.
In the case of small businesses, virtualization has both pros and cons. And whether a small sized business needs to adopt virtualization will be determined from its information needs.

MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY REPORT

1.0 Introduction
The genetic material of many organisms comprises of DNA that encompasses functional units referred to as genes. Agene is either a DNA or RNA segment that codes the information needed to produce a functional biological product (Nelson, 2008). The dissimilar ways genes transmit anatomical, behavioral, and biochemical characteristics from parents to offspring are regarded to as hereditary (Hartwell et al., 2008). The traits of a species are encoded by genes and hereditary variations can be as a result of different alleles as well as environmental disparities which influences the phenotypic expressions. Phenotypic expressions are the observable characteristics that correspond to the organisms gene expression under particular environmental conditions (Gilbride and Victorio, 2009)

Gene mutation is as a result of changes or errors in DNA sequence in an organism that are heritable. Gene mutation can either be spontaneous or induced. Spontaneous mutations are very rare and they are the result of errors in DNA replication or the direct action of transposons (Hartwell et al., 2008). Because of the infrequency of spontaneous mutations, mutations are frequently induced to escalate the possibility of attaining definite changes. Mutations can as well be induced by changes in DNA chemistry or direct interference with repair mechanisms. Chemical mutagens, such as deaminating agents are most frequently used to promote mutations in DNA of an organism (Prescott et al., 2005).

Bacterial exposure to environmental or other chemical agents can result into phenotypic alterations similar to mutations in alleles of a gene. Phenotypic change caused by environmental agents that mimics a mutation is regarded to as a phenocopy. Since phenocopies do not induce changes in genes they are therefore not heritable (Hartwell et al., 2008). Introducing variations in bacteria via environmental agents is easy and permits for rapid assessment of the change a specific environmental factor has educed in the organisms phenotype. Phenotypic changes due to environmental factors tend to affect all cells in a specified culture. Genotypic changes, unlike phenotypic changes that are reversible in the absence of environmental factors. These are permanent changes and only affect a small portion of the cells in a given culture. Genotypic changes that lead to phenotype amongst specified cell culture are the result of mutations taking place in the DNA (Gilbride and Victorio, 2009).

Mutations are readily observed if they result in a noticeable phenotype and a mutation from the common gene form considered as the wild type to a mutant form is regarded to as a forward mutation. Some mutants are unstable and undergo a second mutation to produce an organism that seems to be wild type and this is again called a reversion mutation (Prescott et al., 2005). Thus, an organism that has reverted back to original phenotype is known as a revertant. Tracing genotypic alterations that have taken place in a bacterium can be done by using differential media. This way revertant and mutant could be identified based on phenotypes on the culture media. Besides, nutritional mutants as well exist in bacteria (Prescott et al., 2005). These deficiencies are the result of mutations in genes which create a metabolic pathway that are under the operons control. An operon is a DNA sequence of bases which encompasses a promoter, operator, and one or several structural genes. The expression of genes is usually controlled by an operon. Mutations in a metabolic pathway of a bacterium never permit the microorganism to be grown on a culture medium lacking enough supply of the end product (Prescott et al., 2005). A mutation in a gene encoding a result of the pathway like an enzyme that synthesizes the next intermediate to the pathway will lead to a nonfunctional pathway and growth either the next intermediate within the pathway or end product is needed. Mutants of this kind are known as auxotrophs and need the end product of the pathway growth. Auxotrophs selectivity is just by culturing them on minimal media. Contrarily, microorganisms that grow on minimal medium devoid of supplementation of other growth enhancing factors are called prototrophs. When the metabolic pathway that the microorganism takes for final product synthesis is known, it could be determined at which point of the pathway the mutation has taken place (Prescott et al., 2005).

During the growth of bacterial culture, spontaneous mutations do rarely occur and usually result in a genotypic single nucleotide alteration. There is no definite source of mutation away from spontaneity and the mutant organisms will have diverse traits than the parent strain.  A considerable number of spontaneous mutants lead to bacterial antibiotic resistance that enable bacteria to even grow in presence of antibiotics. This is a selective advantage that allows isolation and selection of resistant mutants (Gilbride and Victorio, 2009).  The aim of the experiment conducted was to gain an understanding of differences between genotypic and phenotypic changes, and as to whether certain phenotypic changes were as a result of environmental or genotype changes. Nutritional mutants were cultured and the point of mutations in the metabolic pathway was determined. Finally, bacterial cultures were grown on streptomycin plates to isolate resistant mutants.

2.0 Methods and Materials
In the first experiment, two nutrient agar plates, one containing phenol and the other with no phenol were streaked with Proteus vulgaris and incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. Extra two nutrient agar plates were streaked with Serratia marcescens. One plate was incubated at room temperature and the other at 37oC for a period of 24 hours. After 24 hours, the plates incubated were examined for growth, swarming, and pigmentation. Additionally, in the experiment two, one white and one red isolated colonies of Escherichia coli (ATCC 15939) were streak on two different MacConkey agar plates. Both plates were incubated for 24 hours at 37oC. After incubation the plates were examined for revertants and mutants. The third experiment, employed 5 dissimilar strains of E. coli (EMG23, KS463, EMG4, EMG5, EMG6) each were cultured on different minimal media having different trytophan biosynthetic pathway intermediates(Anthrantic acid, Tryptophan, and Indole) as well as one control group. 4 drops of 1 casein hydrolysate was added to all plates and spread plated (Gilbride and Victorio, 2009). The plates were later incubated for 24 hour at 37oC and then examined for point of mutation in pathway and wild type strains. The final experiment involved preparation of 3 streptomycin gradient agar plates, which were incubated with 0.1mL of E. coli strain (EMG23) through spread plating method. Plates were labeled in accordance to the concentration of streptomycin (low and high). They were then incubated for 2-4 days at 37oC and were colonies were observed on both high and low concentration streptomycin sides.

3.0 Results

3.1 Experiment 1 Bacterial Variation Because of Environmental Change
When P. vulgaris was streaked on nutrient agar, swarming colonies were observed which was characteristic of this bacterium. However, when it was streaked on nutrient agar with phenol no growth was observed. Besides, when S. marcescens was streaked on the nutrient agar and incubated for 24hour at room temperature, the colonies had a distinct red color. Though, when S. marcescens was incubated for 24 hours at 37oC the colonies observed lacked the red pigment rather they appeared pink pale in color.

3.2 Experiment 2 Bacterial Variation Because of Genotypic Change
When a red colony of E. coli (ATCC 15939) mutant was streak on MacConkey agar plate the colonies were observed to be red in color and fermented lactose (Lac). However, when a white colony of the E. coli mutant was streak on MacConkey agar plate, a mixture of white and red colonies were observed showing that some of the colonies were incapable of fermenting lactose (white colonies), while others were able to ferment lactose (red colonies)

3.3 Experiment 3 Nutritional Mutants
The table below shows the growth or no growth of five strains of E. coli provided with 3 different supplements of Indole, Trytophan, and Anthranilic acid as well as one control group devoid of supplements. Growth implies that the strain is capable of growing on medium comprising of supplements, whereas no growth shows that the strain is unable to grow is the presence of supplement. It was thus noted that all strains of E. coli were able to grow on the medium with trytophan, EMG6 was able grow with all supplements except the control. EMG5 was able to grow with Tryptophan and Indole and both EMG4 and KS463 were unable to grow with no tryptophan. EMG23, a strain of E. coli was able to grow on both non supplemented and supplemented medium as shown in Table 1

3.4 Experiment 4 Isolation of Streptomycin-Resistant Mutant of E. coli
When EMG23 strain was plated on a gradient agar plate encompassing streptomycin and tryptic soy agar no colony growth was observed on all 3 plates. This therefore indicated that no streptomycin resistant mutations occurred in the strain of E. coli.

4.0 Discussion
P. vulgaris is a bacterium which under Enterobacteriaceae class of bacteria. It is as well flagellated bacterium and thus, sometimes is known as peritrichous bacteria (Prescott, 2005). From the results obtained, when P. vulgaris was streak on nutrient agar with no phenol it indicated the swarming characteristic of this bacterium. High motility of P. vulgaris bacteria bring about the swarming characteristic that was observed on the media plate. The phenotype of swarming is easy to identify on a nutrient agar plate, since swarming bacteria cause colonies to come close to each other thus making it hard to isolate a single colony. Though, there was no observable growth of P. vulgaris due to the presence of phenol on the nutrient agar plate that is not the occurrence theoretically. In low concentration of phenol P. vulgaris is not able to swarm and thus, it would encompass usual streaking visible. The presence of phenol in the media makes the Proteus spp flagella not to function properly (Costerton et al., 1974). This is because phenol binds to the proteins and phospholipids that are present on the exterior membrane of the cell wall, inhibiting P. vulgaris to exhibit the swarming characteristics. This experiment once again, it was carried out to signify the difference between phenotypic and genotypic changes. Swarming inhibition in P. vulgaris was due to environmental agent (phenol). Although, the flagella were not functional in phenol presence, the alteration was just a direct result of the environment and the phenotypic alteration was short lived.

The disparities in the color of colonies produced by the same strain of S. marcescens can be ascribed to the environmental conditions. As clearly indicated, the two nutrient agar plates were incubated at different temperatures one at 37oC and the other at room temperature for 24 hour period. S. marcescens colonies coloration was as a result of prodigiosin a secondary metabolite that results to production of a red pigment (Williams, 1973). Prodigiosin biosynthesis by S. marcescens takes place on a narrow temperature range, though the bacteria itself can grow at a broader temperature range (Francia et al., 1997). The utmost prodigiosin production occurs at between 28 oC and 30 oC and thus its synthesis in S. marcescens is normally inhibited at 37 oC (Khanafari et al., 2006). This is in agreement with the obtained results in this experiment because when S. marcescens was plated at room temperature prodigiosin biosynthesis was not inhibited. The inhibition was noted at higher temperature of 37 oC. The significance of this experiment was to prove that alterations in phenotype were not as result of gene mutations, because if alterations were due to genotype then as both plates were streaked with similar strain and similar stock of S. marcescens, then at least colonies with the similar phenotypic changes were expected on both plates. However, this was not evident and the differences can only be ascribed to change in temperatures (an environmental condition). It imperative to note that this is not a genotype permanent change of species, because if the pale pink colonies are restreaked on a nutrient agar plate and incubated at room temperature they will produce prodigiosin and attaining a distinct red color. From the obtained results it can therefore be concluded that higher temperatures of 37 oC and above inhibit the expression of prodigiosin, while lower temperature near room temperatures encourages the prodigiosin expression (Anandkumar et al., 2004).

Examining the results of isolated colonies of E. coli mutant incubated on MacConkey agar both red and white colonies were observed on the plate which was originally streak with white colonies. The logic behind color differences of these colonies lies in the idea that lactose fermenting bacteria (Lac) are able to ferment lactose. Acid is usually produced during lactose fermentation, when acid is produced by bacteria on MacConkey agar that contains pH indicator (neutral red) come in contact with each other they lead to red colonies (Prescott et al, 2005). On contrary, when non lactose fermenting bacteria (Lac-) grow on MacConkey agar they produce no acid and thus, no contact with pH indicator and the colonies grow white in color. It was observed that when red colonies of E. coli are streak the resulting colonies are all red on the plate. This shows that all these colonies are lactose fermenting ((Lac). This as well implies that red colonies undergo forward mutation where the genotype of the colonies does not change from its initial state (Lac) to a mutant (Lac-). However, as observed when white colonies were streak on MacConkey agar the resulting colonies were a mixture of both Lac-Lac, this is because the mutation in the mutant white colony of E. coli is unstable and it often reverts back to initial state (Gilbride and Victorio, 2009). Reversions in the bacterium are permanent alterations in the genotype and in this case depict visible phenotype red colonies.

Table 1 presents the list of E. coli mutant strains grown in minimal media with dissimilar tryptophan intermediates supplementation. This table assists in identifying the strains which grow in different supplementations, thereby allowing detection of a gene in which mutations have taken place in the metabolic pathway for trytophan synthesis. All E. coli strains grow in the presence of tryptophan. This is expected since tryptophan is the end product in the pathway bypassing all the conservations in the intermediates needed to produce tryptophan. As results indicated EMG23 is the wild type of all E. coli strains examined this experiment. This implies that EMG23 is the sole strain which can grow the control plate that had no supplementation. This further implies that the strain is a prototroph and thus does not need supplements to grow on the minimal medium. It can synthesize the end product needed.

E. coli (EMG6) strain has a mutation occurring at point A (trpD, trpE). The logic for this is that if EMG6 is supplied with any other intermediate its capable of growing on the minimal media except in the absence of an intermediate. This implies EMG6 is unable to convert the first Chroismate to Anthranilic acid because of a mutation at point A.  However, when the strain is offered with consecutive intermediates it can synthesize tryptophan. From the results its evident that E. coli strain EMG5 encompasses a mutation occurring at point B (tryC), because when its offered with Anthranilic acid it never grows on the media thus this indicates that point B is mutated and the conversion of Anthranilic acid to Indole is not occurring. Consequently, when an E. coli strain is provided with the next intermediate Indole it grows and becomes evident that the mutation had taken place in point B. KS463 and EMG4 strains of E. coli are unable to grow with no tryptophan presence and can as well not grow in the presence of any other supplementation. However, with the results obtained it still can not be determined at which point in the pathway the mutations have occurred. Mutations identification in anabolic pathway contains a major application and being that a range of these mutants can be employed to establish the identity of pathway intermediates (Prescott, 2005).

Evaluating and examining the final experimental results that cultured E. coli in a gradient agar plate with streptomycin it was evident that there was no observable growth realized by plating. This shows that E. coli colonies underwent spontaneous mutations occurring to become streptomycin resistant hence they were all inhibited in their growth in streptomycin presence. This is a rational outcome because the possibility of achieving spontaneous mutation is very low, approximately one per 107 to 1911 cells. If there was growth on the gradient agar, to be sure that the colonies are real mutants, growth would have to take place on the side with the higher streptomycin concentration. The explanation for this is that, if there was growth on the side with lower streptomycin concentration it could be because of the fact that not adequate streptomycin has reached that part of the plate. However, the presence of bacteria on the side of higher streptomycin concentration then concludes that these bacteria are streptomycin resistant, since the area is hostile for their growth.

In response to the growing demand for secure and simpler browser, Google is about to release their browser dubbed as Chrome, though the beta version is yet to be released. According to Google, this browser can support a range of tasks that most browsers today cannot handle.

Chrome has plenty of features to look forward. One of these is tabs placed on top of the browser. Each tab will work independently from one another and will not affect the overall performance of the browser, thus making tabbed browsing more stable. The browsers default home page will contain a number of the most visited sites of the user.

The browser will also have the Omnibox, a less invasive and auto complete version of this URL box that can search stuffs and propose sites.

Incognito mode will also be made available in Chrome, just like Internet Explorer 8s InPrivate mode. The said function will be done in another browser and will not maintain any browsing history, thus making the browsing experience more private.

Other features included in Chrome are improved management and monitoring of third party plug-ins and malware detection on spurious sites.

On the other hand, Google is also developing software called Gears that will enhance the performance of previous browsers. In relation to Googles job to create better browsing experience to the users, Gears and Chromes source code will be made available for anyone who wishes to edit the mentioned programs.

Based on the enumerated features and since Google has the technical knowledge skills to create good technologies, Chrome seems to be the browser to watch out for.

An American company specializing in internet search and web advertising recently released a tool that translates internet blogs, news articles and text messages from English to Persia and then from Persia to English. This technology was developed in the wake of the chaos and restrictions media personnel have been facing in reporting the bit by bit follow up on Irans disputed election.

The principal scientist heading Googles translation group, Franz Och, was interviewed by Reuters and he opined that with the controversial election going on in Iran, rolling out this product in time to solve the inability for people within and outside Iran to communicate and access relevant information was according to him a natural idea

This latest feat by Google represents the important role that technology is now playing in the advent of the disheartening political unrest taking place in Iran and unmatched since three decades.

Ever since the official result of the recently concluded presidential election was announced, which declared a decisive victory for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran-which is worlds 5th largest oil exporter has been bedeviled by repeated violent protests. Why Because, supporters of the opposition candidate, Mirhossein Mousavi are of the opinion that the election was rigged.

Interestingly, both foreign journalists and Supporters of Mousavi barred from covering or staging street demonstrations have resorted to online communication tools like You Tube (acquired by Google in 2006), Facebook, and Twitter to disseminate information and organize rallies respectively.
