Computer uses in Society

In every sphere of life, computers play a major part in information processing and storage of large volumes of data. In the medical field, computers have been used as means for storage of patients information, diagnosis and research papers, medical journals and important medical documents. As Oak states, This information can be effectively stored in a computer database. Unlike before, doctors no longer have to memorize what medication each patient is on  and the amount needed for every medication.

With computers, patient monitoring has also been made easy and efficient. These patients are now monitored before, during and after procedures. As Candi states, Prior to their advent, it was required that a nurse physically monitor patients. This would sometimes lead to death if the nurse took longer before the next examination. Computer software can also be used in examination of internal body organs. Previously, a patient had to trust the doctors word when seeking medication but can now see internal body organs through radiography scans.

Computer revolution in the field of environmental science has ensured optimum consumption of natural resources. Environmental science and technology is thus gaining attention worldwide (Environmental Science  Technology). Computers are now universal in the workplace (Belford, par 68). For example, telephone systems are multilevel computer networks as opposed to operators linking cables by hand. In the banking industry, errors in monthly statements have reduced because deposits and withdrawals are logged into a customers account right away rather than manual calculations. Checkout counters in retail stores use a bar-code scanner and not a cash register (which requires the clerk to type in the code for the item).

The invention of Computer Comparison Statistics (CompStat) process has helped in managing police operations. The process examines crime, its effect in the community and the police department. The ability and speed of law enforcement agencies to arrest criminals has increased due to computer technology. As Ray states, Advanced global positioning satellite technology and cell phone ubiquity has provided law enforcement officials with additional resources to track and investigate criminal activity.

Throughout history, internet has been the most exceptional discovery in the field of communication. Its advantages are easy and better communication, availability of huge amount of information, provision of all-around entertainment and commerce. Internet disadvantages include theft of personal information, receiving unwanted bulk messages, pornography and virus threat to computers. Internet may inspire insightful thoughts as it sometimes does not provide first hand answers but help in doing more research. Use of internet for school projects should be limited and not banned. This is because of its advantages that outweigh the disadvantages. As Matthew states, Yet, from what Ive seen, the educational benefits of online access are worth it. Yes, parents have to be vigilant.
